As the American population ages, arthritis is becoming more of a problem in our society. Women are especially prone to developing arthritis. Read the list below for some helpful arthritis remedies.
Research has shown that even a modest weight loss has a dramatic effect on arthritis pain, especially pain in the lower joints such as hips and knees. Lose as little as five percent of your body weight and you should experience a reduction in your osteoarthritis pain.
Follow an Anti-Inflammatory diet. This diet is low in dairy and animal fats and high in anti-oxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, olive oil and Vitamin C, which have been shown to reduce arthritis symptoms in dramatic ways. See the links below for more information.
Exercise is important for increasing blood flow to the joints, which discourages further deterioration. In addition, strengthening the surrounding muscles helps to decrease the stress on your joints. Try low-impact exercises such as swimming, biking, and ellipticals to avoid stress and pounding on already tender joints.
Hard-soled shoes, especially when combined with hard floors, can wreak havoc on sore joints. Buy some cushion or gel insoles if you must wear dress shoes, or look for sneakers or walking shoes with built-in cushioning.
Use over-the-counter NSAID pain medications when needed to manage arthritis pain. NSAIDS, such as ibuprofen, naproxen sodium and aspirin not only reduce pain, they also reduce inflammation. As always, check with your doctor before you begin any new medication or diet.
If the above remedies are not managing your arthritis pain, see your doctor for further treatment options.
