The majority of Americans eat too much salt. This is due to processed foods and fast food restaurants and also the "busy" lifestyle we lead these days. It is much easier to stop and get greasy burgers for dinner than go home and cook a meal for the family from scratch.
This has led to millions of Americans being diagnosed with heart disease and dying from heart attacks and strokes each year.
So how do you break the salt habit? Here's five ways!
It all begins with you! If you have heart disease, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol, your doctor has more than likely put you on a low sodium diet or a no salt diet. This is for your own good and you need to change your diet habits and lifestyle.
Start by reading food labels when you shop for groceries. Know what the numbers mean--your doctor will recommend the amount of sodium per day that is right for your condition. Follow his advice!
Adding seasoning to foods when cooking is a common thing to do. Many seasonings and seasoning blends have sodium. Check your labels and toss these out.
Since you have taken the plunge and gotten rid of all your seasoning blends that contain sodium, you need to stock up on seasoning blends that contain natural herbs. You will be surprised at the amount of natural flavor you can get out of these. Don't be afraid to experiment!
Lemon juice is another great natural fruit that adds a punch of flavor. You can use lemon juice on meats to not only help tenderize it, but it also adds flavor. It also adds a punch to fresh salads and vegetables when sprinkled on top.
This is another temptation when eating a meal at home or at a restaurant. The salt shaker is right there in front of you and you are tempted by just having it there. Get rid of it!
If you do not have heart disease, removing the majority of salt/sodium from your diet is a great way to prevent it!
I'm working on using less salt too. I'll give the lemon juice a try. Thanks
