Starting work at a new job can be a scary and daunting experience. You worry that you may not fit in with the rest of the employees. You worry that you might not be able to do the work in a satisfactory manner. You're scared about...a lot of things. So, how do you survive your first day of work? Here are some tips.
This is the most important thing to do on your first day (or first month, for that matter). There will be a lot of new information and you won't remember all of it (you won't be expected to), so it's good to walk around with a notepad and pen and take good notes as well as to stay alert in general.
Your employers want you to ask questions to make sure that you perform your tasks correctly so don't be shy. Ask a lot of questions even if they sound stupid.
Be sure to talk to your co-workers. These will be the people you see and talk to everyday so you probably want to be friendly with them. Of course, you shouldn't socialize too much at the workplace but being friendly with your colleagues is crucial to surviving your first day at work.
Kind of on par with no. 1. On your first day (and first few weeks), make sure you pay attention to everything. Try to remember names, the way things work, where everything is; etc. Obviously, you won't remember everything the first day, but paying extra attention to everything will help you settle in faster.
Remember, it's just your first day of work. No one expects you to know everything. If you mess up on something, it's no big deal. If you feel overwhelmed, just breathe and remain calm. Starting a new job is never easy, but you'll learn the ropes and settle in in due time.
