GERD stands for gastroesophageal reflux disorder. GERD remedies are needed when stomach acid spurts into the esophagus. The stomach can cope with these digestive juices but it is corrosive to the swallowing tube. There are some things that can be done to help the situation.
GERD remedies start with eliminating foods that cause it or make it worse. Eliminate citrus fruits, tomatoes, onions, carbonated drinks, spicy items, chocolate, peppermint, caffeine and fried or fatty foods. Eat a bland diet and stop smoking.
Another of the GERD remedies is to not lie down after eating. It is best to avoid eating prior to going to bed. Sleep with the head, chest and stomach on a slope. This can be done by putting six inch blocks under the head of the bed or under the bedposts. The stomach acid stays in the stomach in this position.
Weight loss seems to help many health problems and it is also one of the GERD remedies. It lessens the symptoms. Extra weight in the abdominal area encourages the acidic liquid from the gut to leak up into the esophagus.
Wearing tight clothing can cause GERD. Even though they are stylish, do not wear things that constrict the stomach like tight pants, belts or sashes. Wear comfortable bed clothing. The elastic on pajama bottoms needs to be loose fitting.
Medicines called Proton Pump Inhibitors help to turn off acid production. Some of the names are Nexium, Prevacid, Prilosec, Protonix, Aciphex and Dexilant. These are the best GERD remedies and many of them can be purchased over-the-counter. Antacids can be taken along with them if needed.
If nothing works, there is surgical treatment for GERD.
