In the early elementary school age, children will probably have this skill learned naturally. In baseball and softball, a child needs to throw a ball accurately at least from shortstop to first base. If your kid can do this or has the strength to throw farther then he or she will do well.
This ability can be difficult to teach. It takes time to learn eye to hand coordination. Start in the house and use a soft Nerf type ball without a glove. The point is to slowly condition the child to track the ball with the eye and use the hands to catch.
Once the child is comfortable catching a ball with his or her hands, introduce the baseball glove. Start catch at very short distances and then increase as the rate of catching improves. A kid that makes lots of outs in games will be a very popular team mate.
This skill can be tried out in the house with a Nerf type bat and ball. It can be done during the time you teach you kid to catch a ball with out gloves. The drill will also teach eye to ball coordination. The point is to make contact and then do strength later.
Your child is still young and there is plenty of time to learn and improve. Don't force or push into intense baseball drills. You may end up making your child hate the sport. Gradual practice over time will work. Make practice a time for play fun with your child.
