A great way to save on your utility bills is to stop drafts under doors while weatherproofing your house. To find out if you have a draft under a door, close the door and light a candle. Hold it to the bottom of the door and watch the flame. If it wavers, you've got a draft which should be stopped. Below are just 5 methods to stop draughts under doors.
Door draft excluder foam strips are available at any local Home Depot or Lowe's hardware store. Easy to install, a door draught excluder foam strip comes with self adhesive and will affix to the bottom edge of the door to stop draughts.
If you find yourself in a hotel with a noisy door draft, roll up any towel (a bath size towel will work best). Simply place at the bottom of the door. Voila! Instant door draft excluder.
To exclude drafts and still have a decorative look, install a copper strip. You'll need just a few penny nails to tack it to the door and it won't exclude as much draft as the other methods but it will look prettier. You might consider weatherproofing the bottom of the door with another method also though.
Fairly new on the market is the twin draft guard which is basically two tubes of styrofoam which fits under the door. The benefit of the twin draft guard is that it moves with the door so you don't have to constantly readjust it. This is the door draft excluder I use in my 1857 home (which has BIG drafts....).
A door draft excluder brush strip is similar to the foam strip but it has brush bristles instead. This is a good draft excluder if you don't have an even surface to seal.
Weatherproofing your home, including doors and windows will save you big bucks on your utility bills. Do it now, before the coldest weather hits.
Excellent list.
Thanks for the door draft excluder methods. H5
