Our Legend of Grimrock party creation tutorial should begin with discussion of character classes and balance. There are three character classes in the game: rogue, fighter and mage. You will want at least one of each so that you have a mix of capabilities. The fourth should be left up to your discretion. Bear one thing in mind: 2 of your members will go up front and should be prepared to engaged in melee combat, the other 2 will be in a back row, so they should be magic users or missile combatants.
Keep in mind that the various races in the game each have their own unique strengths and weaknesses. Humans are suited equally to any occupation, Minotaurs make excellent fighters, Lizardmen are best for rogues, and Insectoids make the perfect mages. However, just because they all excel at one thing doesn't mean you should exclude all other possibilities. This does not mean that you cannot make, for example, an Insectoid fighter or a Minotaur rogue.
Attributes exist in many roleplaying games and that is no different here. Strength determines a character's carrying capacity and attack power and is required for a fighter. Dexterity helps one hit or avoid being hit and is key for the rogue. Vitality increases life total and ability to overcome illness and can be needed by anyone. Willpower is most useful for magic-users. Bear these things in mind when raising the attributes in the Legend of Grimrock party creation process.
Each class has different skills that you may pick from. Consider each choice carefully, read the details and decide wisely. The game lets you customize characters in many different ways, making them better offensively, defensively, or in a support role. Some skills will emphasize melee over missile attacks or vice versa, some are just there to boost your abilities with a particular set of weapons such as maces, axes, swords or unarmed combat.
Traits allow you to personalize Legend of Grimrock party creation even further. One trait is reserved for Minotaurs, another is set aside for Insectoids only. Other than that, everything is available to all. Certain traits boost attributes while others alter skills or affect resistances.
