I guess one could always be hiding somewhere. The following five animals were once considered to be extinct ... but then they found some more.
The Ivory Billed Woodpecker once populated the Southeastern United States as well as Cuba. It is the largest American woodpecker, with a wingspan of 30 feet. The final sighting of this woodpecker was reported in 1944, in Louisiana. No others were seen until a kayaker and birdwatcher saw one in Arkansas in February of 2004. Two weeks later, someone else reported sighting the bird as well. No photographs have yet been taken.
This little lizard has been thought to be extinct since 1959. It was rediscovered in Australia in 1992 ... in the stomach of a snake that had been run over on the highway.
This bird has been believed to be extinct since 1906. It is native to the Phillipines, and was found living in 1992 in a five hundred acre section of forest. This bird is considered to be the most endangered bird in the world.
The Mountain Pygmy Possum is a small marsupial that has been considered extinct for 20,000 years until one was found in the kitchen of a skiing lodge in southeast Australia in 1996. Three additional little possums were found in 1970.
The Dwarf Lemur has been thought to be extinct since 1875. However this little tree dwelling marsupial was rediscovered in the year 1966, near Mananara, Madagascar.
