Fences can be functional, when you need to keep something in or out, or decorative, when you need to add a little something to your landscape. When you go to construct a fence, the type of fence that you decide on may depend on a number of factors, but you should always keep these five types in mind. The fences on this list excel at one or both of the main fence functions.
Picket fences have come, in part, to symbolize the American dream. These fences are perfect to create a small physical barrier, without being so big that one could not get over it if you needed to. These fences work perfectly around front yards, and are present around many of them, but they can also go wherever you need an attractive barrier, like around a garden or near a water feature. The best feature is how simple these fences are to build.
Nothing beats a natural stone wall for defining a space with a beautiful structure. While you can quarry the stone to stack it, these walls seem to look better if you just use random fieldstones with mortar and make the base wider to support the structure. These fences have been a mainstay in the rocky Northeast for centuries, both for defining boundaries and beautifying landscapes. Robert Frost's poem, "Mending Wall" speaks about the springtime ritual of rebuilding a stone wall after a year's worth of damage.
The combination of a brick structure with iron highlights atop the fence presents a fence that is both functional and beautiful. The brick creates a barrier to keep people out or in, while the ironwork provides a touch of class. These types of fences are perfect for hidden gardens or even graveyards.
These fences are exactly what they sound like, posts in the ground and beams running from post to post. For such a simple fence, it can impart a look of elegance over an area. While these fences aren't good for keeping people out, they work effectively for livestock. These types of fences are often painted white and seen around horse pastures. For a more rustic look, you can use split logs instead of beams, creating a split-rail fence.
Definitely not the most attractive fence on this list, but chain link has its place. When you need to construct a functional fence quickly, there is no better way to go than a chain link. On top of its easy construction, chain link allows you to see through it, so it provides a physical barrier without creating a visual barrier.
Great list.
