Depending on how elaborate the party is, start planning early.
Here's a timeline for you:
Plan the party's theme, activities and music. Send out the invitations. Hire any entertainers you may need and/or the caterer. This time frame will be VERY handy if you need to change the theme, etc. Have a plan B!
Two to three weeks before, order the nonperishable supplies and decoration. And get started hiring the party's helpers.
This would also be a good time to decide on your exact menu and make a shopping list.
One week before, Call those guests who haven't responded yet to their invites (RSVPs). Confirm the entertainer, caterer and the helpers.
Two to three days before, buy groceries. Make any dishes that can be prepared and frozen. Begin cleaning the house.
Thaw frozen foods; finish housecleaning; decorate the party space and set up party tables and utensils. Baking desserts the day before will actually make them taste even better on the big day-particularly if you're baking a pie or cheesecake.
Complete the food preparation. Do a final check of the party space, bar and kitchen. Give yourself plenty of time to get ready. Take a deep breath and enjoy!
