The online community is one of the largest communities in the world, and just like any other community, people in the online community should have some etiquette. Here are the top five things you should NEVER do online.
The internet is full of helpful information, interesting stuff, shopping opportunities, social interactions... and scams. And let me tell you... no one likes a scam except the people who directly benefit from the scam. Don't do it. If people discover you are even just promoting a scam, they will never really have an easy time trusting you. So if you want trust, respect, and healthy online relations, stay away from scams.
There are far better ways to promote yourself, your ideas, your work, and your products than by spamming people. Why are other ways better? Because people hate spam. E-mail providers even have spam detectors, spam folders, and options to report spam which should make it very clear to spammers that what they are doing is wrong and unwanted. So don't do it.
If you hack, it probably means that you like having that kind of knowledge and power. But hacking is NOT okay. Now, I know that some hackers are relatively harmless, but even the harmless ones are annoying (gamers!). So before you hack into people's accounts, whether it's just to change their information as a joke, or to steal their information, or to be able to see if you could do it... take a look at what you are really doing. If you're hacking, then you are being a dishonest, deceitful, criminal, bully! So stop.
It is great to comment on something online if you find it interesting, fun, or helpful and it is definitely okay to post comments that add to something, help someone, or promote yourself in a positive way. But it is not okay to post ignorant, rude, or mean comments just because you "will probably never meet the person" who posted the content you're commenting on. Do you really want to be known as someone who is stupid or mean? I hope not.
Online bullying is an evergrowing problem, and most often the targets are children, tweens, and teenagers. But anyone, of any age or background, can be a victim to online harassment. Make sure it's NOT from you. Unless you want to feel partly responsible for someone's death... That's right, online bullying is driving more and more people to suicide. I don't know about you, but I would not want to feel like I was part of the reason someone ended their life.
People also post things about their kids or when they are going on vacation. It's getting a little too impersonal on Facebook people need to consider the Pro's and Con's before joining the site and sharing personal info where anyone can see and share.
Right on. H5
Great list Meagan,I agree with Listmaker too about people giving up all kinds of information on their kids too. Just not good!
I think this is a wonderful list of things not to do online. Well presented too.
I hate when people post info about their kids on Facebook. Pet peeve. Good list of things to not do on line.
Nice list of things never to do online. I never post my photo, address or phone number. Lots of people do, but I don't want the world to have that information. Thanks for publishing this on List My Five.
