Prevention of Type 2 Diabetes is something many of us need to be educated about. There are two types of diabetes. Type 1 usually occurs in children and young adults (although it can happen at any age) and is not as common. It only happens in about 5 to 10 percent of all cases. Type-1 is triggered by an autoimmune response while type-2 has everything to do with lifestyle. Type 2 diabetes is growing fast and accounts for almost 90 percent of all cases. There are many people who are at risk for getting it and they often ignore that fact. There are some things that can be done to prevent or reverse this disease.
Set a Goal to change your lifestyle for the prevention of type 2 diabetes. Being educated on the facts about the disease is helpful, but the benefit comes when you are determined to change some bad habits. Do not wait until there is a wake up call. There are many things that can be done to improve your health. Talk to others in the family and get them involved. Children are also at risk for this condition and they may need the help, too.
The love of food is a problem for most of us. Those who have large waist measurements are at a higher risk for type 2 diabetes. The belly fat can make us insulin resistant. One of the most important steps in the prevention of type 2 diabetes is to loose weight. Eating large portions and gobbling down food causes weight gain. Try to take smaller portions, avoid eating on the run and do not skip breakfast. We all tend to eat more when we are starving. Eat more vegetables and fruits. Instead of grabbing high calorie snacks, get an apple or some carrot sticks. Many of us take in too many carbohydrates and processed foods. We also adore our sweets. It is okay to have a little bit of something sweet every now and then, just not all of the time.
We are often too sedentary. We work long hours sitting at a desk or plunked in front of a television. It is time to get up and start moving. Burn those calories and improve your cardiovascular health at the same time. Exercise for at least 30 minutes each day. If you pick activities that you enjoy, you will be less likely to give up an exercise program.
Another step in the prevention of type 2 diabetes is getting your rest. Those who have a good night's sleep have better insulin levels throughout the day. Stay away from caffeine in the evening or anything that will be too stimulating before going to bed.
Stress can be hard on us in many ways. Try to relax in order for the prevention of type 2 diabetes. Being overly anxious or depressed can cause problems with normal insulin levels in the body. Take a stress management class or read some good self-help books.
Seek some medical attention or assistance in any of these areas. A doctor can help you find ways for prevention of type 2 diabetes.
