The history of stamps is an interesting one. Adhesive postage stamps were first used in 1840. They were introduced to the world in England. These, of course, were the stamps one had to lick in order for them to adhere.
Leonardo da Vinci first drew the concept of contact lenses in 1508, but the first contact lens was not created until 1887. It was made entirely of glass and covered the entire eye. Plastic lens became available in 1939, and still covered the entire eye. Plastic lens that covered just the cornea became available in 1948 and in 1971 soft contact lenses were introduced.
Kleenex was introduced into the American market in 1924 by the Kimberly Clark Corporation. Kleenex was first called Kleenex 'Kerchiefs. Kleenex replaced Celluwipes, which were marketed as "disposable handkerchiefs."
The first mechanical dishwasher was invented in 1979 by an Illinois housewife, Josephine Cochrane. Ms. Cochrane was distressed by the number of dishes that were broken by her maids in the kitchen and was seeking a safer means of dishwashing rather than one merely more convenient.
Prior to 1938, what toothbrushes that were in use had bristles taken from the stiff hairs along the backs of pigs. The first nylon toothbrush hit the American market in 1938, and the first electric toothbrush was invented the year after, although it did not gain popularity until the 1960s.
What a great list! H5
