Reading is essential at work and at school. Increased reading speed allows you to get more done and free up time for other activities. Regardless of the rate or level at which you currently read, you can improve your reading speed with little practice. Use speed reading techniques at every opportunity and set aside a few minutes each day to develop your reading speed further.
The best way to increase your reading speed is to read as often as possible. Instead of just reading what is required for work or school, read about subjects you enjoy. Keep magazines or a book of short stories or jokes handy for breaks or waiting time. Make reading a pleasant part of your daily routine.
Scan through your material before reading the content. Focus on chapter or article subheadings to get a feel for the subject matter. Study diagrams or images before digging into the text.
Read two or more words at a time rather than individual words. Skim material with few words per line, such as a newspaper column, to practice this technique.
Spend 15 minutes each day reading as quickly as possible. Use your index finger to increase your reading rate. Point to the words and follow y our finger with your eyes, increasing the speed at which you move your finger. Or hold an index card below the current line and move it down the page at an even pace.
Try out an online program such as Spreeder or ReadingSoft (see Resources) to establish your current speed and track your progress as you increase your reading rate.
