The month of May is a beautiful and vibrant time of the year. May was originally the third month of the Roman calender, but later changed to the fifth month and always had 31 days. It is believed that the word May originated from the word "Maia" the Roman goddess of spring and growth.
The birthstone for May is the Emerald and the flowers are the Hawthorne and Lily of the Valley.
May is the most beautiful month of the year in the Northern climates. Temperatures are warm but not hot, and the ice and snow is gone. Trees, grass and flowers begin to bloom and gardeners are busy planting their vegetables. Birds and animals are preparing for new life and spring is in the air everywhere.
Mother's Day takes place on the second Sunday of May in America. The first Mother's Day was in 1908, it was recognized by the president and congress and officially became a holiday in 1914.
Two other holiday celebrated in May are Armed Forces day on the third Saturday of May and Memorial Day which is the last Monday of May. Both holidays honor the men and women of the military, but Memorial Day specifically honors those who gave their lives while serving the United States in war.
