Evening primrose oil is approved for atopic dermatitis in several countries outside of the United States. Individuals who are allergic to plants in the Onagraceae family, gamma-linolenic acid or other ingredients in evening primrose oil should avoid the substance. Individuals with seizure disorders and pregnant/breastfeeding women should also avoid evening primrose oil.
Probiotics healthy bacteria- like an anti biotic) show promise for reducing or preventing atopic eczema/dermatitis syndrome in children. Infants benefit when their mothers take probiotics during pregnancy and breast-feeding. Direct supplementation of infants may reduce the incidence of atopic eczema by as much as half. It may also reduce cow's milk allergy and other allergic reactions during weaning. Probiotics may stabilize the intestinal barrier function and decrease gastrointestinal symptoms in children with atopic dermatitis. Children do differ, however, in their responsiveness to specific probiotics. Probiotics are generally regarded as safe for human consumption. Long-term consumption of probiotics is considered safe.
Green tea can have an anti inflammatory effect when applied topically. The tea leaves also contain antioxidants to help repair this damaged skin. Soak green tea bag in just enough warm water to cover bags. Let tea bags cool, remove from water and place on affected skin area. Let the bags sit for up to 15 minutes before replacing with fresh. Sometimes keeping the damp tea bags in the refrigerator helps ease itching when placed on skin. Chamomile is a soothing herb, which promotes relaxation as well as a gentle healing to inflamed areas. Can consume internally and externally. After using a tea bag, place team bag on irritated skin spot for up to 20 minutes.
