Introduction:

A grant writing portfolio allows a grant writer to showcase their experience to potential employers or clients. A freelance grant writer should always have a up to date grant writing portfolio.

Training Certifications

Showcase training, completion certificates and workshop certificates in your grant writing portfolio that would help advance your learning in grant writing. Such certificates include grant writing certifications, completion certificates for fund-raising seminars and grant writing workshop certificates.

Sample Grant Proposal

Always include a sample grant proposal or two in a grant writing portfolio. Potential employees or clients want to see a writing sample that best represents your writing skills and analytical abilities. Make sure to get permission to showcase a proposal from the group that you wrote it for before showcasing it in your writing portfolio. Always black out sensitive information and show it to the them before using the old grant proposal. Never put a grant proposal in a portfolio that is still active, nor should you ever let a client or potential boss make photo copies of your sample grant proposal.

Resume

A resume should be front and center in a grant writing portfolio, showcasing your education and experience in grand writing, the non profit sector and any experience in a vocation that you use as a niche. For example if you was a nurse for five years and now write grant proposals for the medical field you should still keep the nurse experience as a important part in your resume.

Letters of Recomendations

There should be at least two and up to four letters of recommendations in a grant writers portfolio. Recommendations should be signed letters from past clients, describing their experience with you as a grant writer. Many grant writers will request a letter of recommendation from any clients that they work well with and rotate the letters in their portfolio depending on the type of job they are working on.

Description of Services

Go beyond the basic sentience and description of "I write grants". Describe what type of grant services you provide and what you can do for them as grant seekers. Describe any specialties you may have.




Final Thoughts

Always keep extra resumes in your grant writing portfolio so you may give them out as needed.
