Here are a few tips that can help save money and that you might find practical too!
How about skipping the microwave popcorn & just (well) microwaving popcorn? Fill a brown paper bag with ¼ cup of kernels, fold the top a few times, microwave for 2-3 minutes (listen until there are about 2 seconds between pops) and add your own butter and salt. Experiment with amount, how you fold the top, and time. These are all variables that will vary by size and power of your microwave. I haven't actually tried this one...but I am going to buy some lunch bags and give it a try...I have an air popper, so I have popcorn.
Combine ½ cup of pasta, ½ cup water, and a little salt in a microwave safe bowl. Cook on high for two minutes at a time and stirring between each cycle until pasta is done, (you may need to add a few tablespoons of water after 3rd cycle), it shouldn't take more than eight minutes. Stir in ½ cup milk and ¼ to ½ cup cheddar cheese. Microwave in 30 second cycles stirring between each cycle until cheese makes a creamy sauce. It's gotta be better than that powdered cheese.
You can spread nuts out in a single layer on a microwave safe plate (not paper for this one) and cook for 3 minutes followed by 1 minute cycles until done. Time needed will depend on your microwave and the type of nuts being toasted.
Crack an egg and put it in a microwave safe bowl (or cup); add 1/3 cup of water and ½ tsp vinegar. Cover with microwave safe plate or saucer and cook for one minute at 80% power. Add a little time if needed depending on your microwave
Here's a way to impress your friends with a sort of fancy coffee drink. You can make a frothy milk for your coffee with these easy steps: Fill a jar halfway with milk, shake for about thirty seconds, REMOVE the lid (most are metal and do not play so well with microwaves!), microwave 30 seconds. Pour the milk into your coffee and hold back the foam with a spoon or spatula.and then scoop the foam on top of the coffee.
I've adapted this list a little bit from an article I found in Reader's Digest.
