It is not an easy task and one that should not be rushed, but often siblings have only a few days to liquidate an estate. All items must be removed in order to sell a house.
Often a parent has a list of items that go to each child. Take these items out first. These are not always the most valuable but are the most sentimental.
Each sibling should remove any item they gave as a gift over the years. Even if you do not want the gift back, remove it to help clear the house.
Take out all the best and most coveted items and place them in one area. Go room by room and select them. Draw numbers as to who is first to choose these items. Choose until they are gone.
All homes have junk. Everyone must go around with a trash bag and remove the junk items. A dead Chia Pet, a dishcloth sewn into pantaloons and displayed until dusty, plastic cups and empty saved jars. You will immediately recognize junk. Perhaps it's an item you have been longing to toss every time you visited.
Now is the time you suddenly want an item that wasn't considered for the choosing pile. "Does anyone care if I take this?" Suddenly when you are boxing up the unwanted items going to charity, something tugs at your heart and you find a reason you need it. Keep this friendly, as when an item is noticed another one may want it too. Toss a coin or just be generous.
All that is left is the food and cleaning tools. Those who are staying to clean or live locally will keep or dispose of these when the house is completely empty.
Great tips.
