A small budget need not prevent you from furnishing your home. In fact, you don't need money at all if you are persistent and patient. You can find several sources for free or cheap furniture right in your own neighborhood.
Check with your local Department of Sanitation to find out which day heavy trash is collected. This method to get free furniture works best in spring and fall, when people clean up basements and garages. Map out a route in a nice neighborhood in your area and cruise it before trash pick-up starts on heavy trash day. Keep your eye out for furniture set out with the trash. When you find something you like, load it up and take it home. No one needs to know how you got it.
If you live in an apartment complex, take a cruise past the dumpsters during the last week of the month. People who are moving out often leave behind items they just don't feel like moving. Those items will end up by the dumpsters, where you can pick up any furniture you find. Check at other times of the month also -- maintenance staff will place items abandoned furniture by the dumpsters when they clean up after move outs.
Craigslist has somewhat of a notorious reputation, but you can find some great furniture in the "Free" section. Check twice a day, in the morning and afternoon, for new postings. Excellent deals can also be found in the "Furniture" section of Craigslist -- you can buy high-quality items for next to nothing by checking for deals frequently.
Freecycle.org promotes the recycling of all kinds of items from building materials to car parts. You can occasionally find free furniture offered. Set up an account and check the website frequently. Be patient and you may find the armoire of your dreams.
Shop your local thrift store to get cheap furniture. Some thrift stores have discount days, where items are marked down as much as 50 percent. Visit the thrift stores in higher income neighborhoods for better quality furniture.
Picking up unwanted but serviceable furniture on heavy trash day or from dumpsters keeps it out of landfills. Help yourself save money while helping the environment.
I know my local thrift store gets brand new furniture donated to them. You can get some great deals on it.
