A bargello needlepoint sampler is made up of small groups of Florentine embroidery stitch techniques. It is quite easy to work and usually expresses the stitcher's creativity, sense of color and expertise in mastering the bargello stitch.
Cross stitch samplers tend to have sayings, motifs and borders. For most of them, all the letters of the alphabet are stitched in various colors--some with fancy script or plain block script. An attractive border is also worked to frame the sampler.
Many antique samplers have verses, quotes and famous sayings stitched on fine linen cloth. Centuries ago, antique samplers were once made by young girls to practice embroidery techniques; now they are to be found in museums. In some cases, charted designs of antique samplers can be found online or at fine needlework stores.
Silk embroidery samplers are usually stitched with Chinese silk thread on fine linen or silk fabric. They are worked with a variety of stitch techniques from basic embroidery stitches to more elaborate silk embroidery techniques.
Crewel embroidery samplers are worked in fine wool yarn on fabric that has been stretched in an embroidery hoop. Wedding and Jacobean samplers are among the most popular crewel embroidery samplers.
