Daily, fruit is used in the preparation of food or for other purposes. Here are some basic tips how to get the best out of it.
Are your avocados sometimes too slow to ripen? Place them in a fruit bowl with other fruit; such as apples, pears and bananas. Otherwise, the old brown paper bag to put them in for about two days will also work.
To peel oranges quickly and separate the sections cleanly, place the oranges in boiling water for about 5 minutes. Take it out, let cool and then peel.
Do not through away the rind of lemons, grapefruit or oranges. They make excellent flavourings for breads, cakes and icings. Grate the rinds and store in the freezer.
If you want to prevent cut fruits from darkening but do not like the idea of sour lemon juice all over them, simply dilute the juice. A solution of the juice of 1 lemon mixed with 1 cup of water will do the trick. Otherwise use orange juice.
Glacé fruits will be less sticky if you freeze them before chopping or cutting them. Cutting will be much easier still if you keep dipping the knife into hot water.
