Despite many people's beliefs, Pit Bulls are not vicious dogs; in fact, they are one of the most intelligent breeds among dogs.
Years ago, Pit Bulls were used as nanny dogs. They stayed at home with the children and watched over them, ensuring that nothing bad would happen to them while the parents were gone.
It is only a fallacy that Pit Bulls have locking jaws. They do not have locking jaws, they have the same type of jaws as every other dog.
The American Temperament Testing Society performed temperament tests on 122 breeds of dogs. Pit Bulls scored higher than Golden Retrievers, Beagles, and Labradors. These tests show that a Labrador Retriever is more likely to bite than a Pit Bull would.
Pit Bulls have a very high tolerance of pain. This is why they make such good dogs in a family setting. If a child gets too rough, a Pit Bull can withstand the pain without snapping.
If Pit Bulls are not socialized with other dogs in their early puppy years, they can be dog aggressive. They may not like other dogs, however, they DO know the difference between a dog and a child/human being. Just because a dog is dog aggressive, does not mean they are people aggressive.
Pit Bulls are not born vicious, however because of their size and natural strength, they can cause harm if they are trained to be vicious. A Pit Bull has to be trained to be vicious, it does not come naturally. These dogs are unjustly discriminated against. Some cities have set Pit Bull bans and euthanize Pit Bulls no matter their age or temperament.
