Using only one card keeps you focused on the amount put on credit each month and the interest rate charged. Multiple cards make it easy to forget purchases and forget the total amount spent.
This sounds like a ridiculous suggestion, but paying cash at the grocery store limits what you buy. Set down limits for the grocery store and clothes shopping and save yourself major credit card interest.
Home layaway is a bank to put change or funds each week toward something you'd usually buy on credit. If the item you want is also available from a store with a layaway program, this is another option for purchase.
Make up lists on wants and needs. This helps focus on personal needs versus vanity purchases. If the item is on the wish or want list and you don't have the cash to pay for it during the month, don't buy it.
If you want something, wait three days to buy it. Each day during the wait ask yourself if you really need it and want to pay interest on the item. By the end of the waiting period, odds are you'll change your mind about impulse purchases, if you don't really need the item.
Thanks for the great tips on avoiding credit card debt. H5!
I like the three day rule. Impulse buying is bad news.
