The BARF diet (Biologically Appropriate Raw Foods or Bones and Raw Food) is a terrific food program on which to put any dog. Dogs in the wild eat natural meats and vegetables - nothing like the fillers that are in commercial dog food or dog bones. A dog in the wild never meets a carbohydrate and shouldn't have them in his diet in domestic life either.
Chewing on raw bones and vegetables will naturally descale your dog's teeth of tartar buildup. Clean teeth and healthy gums mean less chance of bacteria entering your dog's system.
Natural meats and vegetables will provide more nutrients than even the best, such as Iams, do food. Feeding the BARF diet correctly means that your dog is eating a balanced diet.
Since the BARF diet is so nutritious that most of the nutrients are used by your dog's digestive system, the byproduce (stool) will be much smaller and compact. Easier cleaning up after Fido is always good.
A lot of purebred dogs suffer for all those good looks (another reason to adopt a mutt, imho). Skin allergies are often a side effect that a gorgeous Golden Retriever must suffer but the BARF diet may well improve, if not cure, your dog's skin and ear allergies. The ocurrance of hot spots may also be much improved.
Added fats and oils included in your dog's diet when eating the BARF diet will restore your dog's coat to a lustrous, thick coat and may well reduce the amount of shedding you'll see.
Feeding the BARF diet may not be for everyone as you do have to be diligent about balancing your dog's diet but, if you really want to do what's best for your dog, get on the BARF bandwagon.
What an unfortunate name for a dog's diet :-)
we have four dogs on a raw diet here, love it. Good list! Healthier dogs is better anytime.
A good list. I'm currently trying to talk my husband into feeding our dog real food instead of Iams, I might just have to start with bones.
