In the U.S., everyone who celebrates Xmas has their own way of doing so. However, there are some American Christmas traditions that stand out over the others. Check it out!
Considering that the entire basis for the particular holiday is religious in nature, it's hard not to include attendance at religious service (or mass, depending on the Christian denomination in question) as number 1 on the American Christmas traditions list. The holiday has become quite secular and commercial, but there's still plenty of focus on the spiritual aspects of the day.
Nothing surprising here: exchanging presents (gift cards, jewelry, video games, etc.) is one of the most well known American Christmas traditions. It is so popular to buy presents for friends and family during this time that there are several methods: the more traditional exchange, the Secret Santa game whereby recipients are gifted by secret individuals, stockings (filled with tiny, less expensive offerings) and so on.
Major American Christmas traditions also include music, and plenty of it! Caroling (groups of people singing holiday songs) door to door is especially common. The radio, television and other forms of media are stuffed with tracks like, "White Christmas", "Silent Night" and similar songs. One may frequently hear them in stores while shopping!
Families and friends in the U.S. often gather to celebrate the holidays with a large feast at dinner time, typically featuring ham, turkey or roast beef. Baking is also typical among American Christmas traditions. Friends gather to bake pies, cookies and more delicious treats for consumption when the time is right.
Many in the U.S. buy fancy lights, mangers, reindeer, Santa Claus figures, elves and more with which to decorate their homes. Decorating of trees is also popular among American Christmas traditions. Trees are decorated with lights and other small ornaments and tend to be topped off with an angel figure or a star.
Among the American Christmas traditions not mentioned: letters and visits to Santa Claus! How could that possibly be left off? Happy holidays!
