Elinor Lipman is a satirical novelist whose writing is cosmopolitan and readable at the same time. She's written 10 books, and I love them all. Here are my top five Elinor Lipman books.
This is the first Elinor Lipman book I read, and it's a prize. She hits the nail on the head of being single in a world where everyone thinks everyone (especially women) needs a mate. This tale is of one woman going home and dealing with being single around a bunch of her married former classmates.
This novel is a serious as Elinor Lipman gets, but she keeps it funny and touching at the same time. A young girl's family is refused the opportunity to vacation at a hotel because they are Jewish. The girl works around this issue by getting invited to the hotel with another family.
This Elinor Lipman book feels like a tidy little life packaged in book form. A couple who both teach at a women's college have a daughter who they raise in the dorm where they live. They spend time writing letters of grievance, making their life by making a statement. Several twists and turns pop up.
This book is part mystery and part romance and all good with Elinor Lipman's superb writing. A dating couple (or were they?) dies and their respective children show up to bury them and take care of business.
April Epner is a teacher who is quiet and bookish. She was adopted as an infant, but April doesn't feel the need to find her birth mother. But all hell breaks loose when her birth mother finds her.
All of Elinor Lipman's books are wonderful. Read one then another.
She does sound like an interesting writer. May check her out. Thanks for the info on these Elinor Lipman books. high 5

Great idea, ListMaker. Dr. Seuss coming up!
I have just GOT to get down to the library. You're making me look bad; haven't even heard of Elinor Lipman. Geez. Can't you do something by Dr. Seuss?
I haven't read any of her books, but I might just have to rethink that!
