Introduction:I love persimmons. When I was a kid, I learned the hard way, there are methods to properly eating persimmons.
When you get persimmons from a supermarket, they will tend to be very firm. You will want to leave them on a counter for a while (perhaps a few days) so that they become a little less firm. Once they become a little spongy, they should be good enough to eat without making your mouth feel dried out or pucker from any sour taste. You can also wait a bit longer for the persimmons to get mushy soft. At that point, it will feel looser than playdough, but the insides will be honey sweet.
Once the persimmons has lost some of the original firmness, you can cut it up into wedge-shaped pieces and enjoy just like an apple or a pear. Make sure you take the skin off as that part is not edible.
You can also cut up into pieces or dice them and add into a salad. It's similar to adding bits of other fruits such as apples, oranges, etc.
Just like most any other fruits, you can use persimmons to make deserts such as Jello, cup cakes, etc. You can even use persimmons as decorations on top of cakes, just as you would with peaches, pears, strawberries, etc.
Try adding some mushy soft persimmons to a cup of boring, non-sweet tea. You'll get a gentle combined taste that reminds you of honey and tropical fruits.
Persimmons is a great fruit. If you can find them in season, grab a bunch and try these tips. You'll be glad you did!

Can't believe you didn't mention persimmon pudding. (and I thought you were a Southern boy!) But thanks, I didn't know you could eat them any other way!
I have never heard of persimmons either. I just googled them to see what they were. Thanks for this list. I am eager to see what they look like and will look for them next time I'm in the grocery store to see what they look like.
It is hard for me to admit this, but I have never tried a Persimmon. You've convinced me! Next time I go to the store, they will be on my list.
